June 30th, 2010

The draft was off the charts, literally. The Edmonton Olilers decided to take Taylor Hall, which I can't say I was surprised, but was kind of disappointed. I felt that Tyler Seguin deserved to go number one overall. Neiter the Edmonton Oilers or Boston Bruins should be thinking they lost out on the draft, both are unreal prospects. It was interesting to watch Cam Fowler and Brandon Gormley fall so low. It seemed right to watch newly retired Scott Niedmayer hand off the jersey to Fowler, who was frequently compared to him. It was awesome to see Brandon Gormely go to Phoenix, who continues to get better and better. Jaden Schwartz was taken very early by St. Louis which left Montreal Canadiens without him. They selected Jarred Tinordi, the hulking defencemen from the USHL. I was happy with this selection.

Prospects I'll be watching, other than first rounders:

Ryan Spooner- Boston Bruins- 45th overall
Kirill Kabanov- Dallas Stars- 65th overall
Jordan Weal- LA Kings- 70th overall
Stanislav Galiev- Washington Capitals- 86th overall
Mathieu Corbeil- Columbus Blue Jackets- 102th overall
Konrad Abeltshauser- San Jose Sharks- 163th overall
Stephan MacAuley- St. Louis Blues- 164th overall

Someone who I was super surprised to see drafted... Sawyer Hannay of the Halifax Mosseheads. I was able to see him play, and watched him extensivey in his training camp. Simply put, I didnn't even feel he deserved to make his junior team. I see him as a Kevin Bieska, just much, much worse.

The draft day coverage starts in less that 5 hours, and still no one knows who the Edmonton Oilers will take 1st overall. There have been mock drafts, and mock drafts but GM's and scouts have nothing to do with those. So we will wait and see.

My opinon, Tyler Seguin should be taken 1st overall. The right-handed center seems more ready and mature then his "rival" Taylor Hall. To see Seguin's development after being cut for Team Canada shows his desire to be the best player he can be. He knows the pain and sacrifice it takes to be a NHL star. After watching some meetings with both Tyler and Taylor, my belief is stronger. Tyler was confident with lots of eye contact and laughter while Hall spoke to the floor and had many "uums." Edmonton needs a natural center too, they already wonderful prospect wingers and just imagine the beauty of Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson, Seguin and Jordan Eberle in the future...

Montreal has the 27th pick and St. John Sea Dog, Stanislav Galiev is projected there abouts. I sure hope if this kid is still around for that pick (I imagine he will be), that they do not make the mistake of passing over him. I have watched him play and he is a truely amazing sight to see. Give him a few more years and he will be an elite player in the NHL, just wait and see. Trading up for Mikael Granland would be great to see but not sure how that would work out. The Canadian comparison to Granland, Jaden Schwartz could be avalible with the 27th pick too, and I wouldn't mind him being a Hab.

School's out for summer... if you didn't sing that to the Alice Cooper classic, you've got to wonder about yourself. GM's have been busy, and have entertained us already.

All the way back on June 17th, my team, the Montreal Canadiens traded away the goaltender that carried them to the Eastern Finals, for Lars Eller and Ian Shultz. A lot of initial reaction was that this was a ridiculous trade, however when you take a look at it, it may not seem all that bad. It was smart to trade him at his peak (I may have waited till Draft Day) but for the money I imagine he was going to ask for, and the risk of him dropping back into his backup role self, they timed it right. I love the style of Lars Eller, and am very excited to see him suit up in a Habs uniform, Ian Shultz also seems like a player that Montreal needs, a strong power forward that is able to put the puck in the net. Now it's just the hope of Carey Price being the goaltender he can be. It's a wait and see kind of trade.

2 days later, Nashville trades the rights of Dan Hamhuis to Eastern Conference Champs, the Philadelphia Flyers, for Ryan Parent and a 7th round pick. A good trade all in all if Philly is able to lock Hamhuis up. Nashville doesn't loose to much as they receive just as young talent Ryan Parent who won't cost them as much. No worries to the Preds fans, remember you still have Shea Weber and Ryan Suter.

Nathan Horton and Greg Campbell are now Bruins. They traded away there 15th overall pick, a 3rd rounder and soon-to-be-gone-anyways Dennis Wideman. A fantastic trade for Boston, and Florida did well given the situation. Horton wanted out, and Florida was able to get a great pick, and a defencemen that will add depth to that core. Rumour has it that Edmonton wants the 15th pick, so it'll be interesting to see what develops there.

Chicago is just distributing players for picks, picking up a first rounder, 2nd rounder and 6th rounder so far. They had to dump salaries and this way makes sense. They've also pick up a veteran in Marty Reasonor and sub par prospect Joey Crabb. Losing Dustin Byfuglien and prospect Akin Aliu are the biggest hits to them, but was necessary.

Draft Daaay.

And the 2010 NHL season is over, well on the ice. I don't think Chicago ending there 49 year cup-less streak was much a surprise to the hockey world, but still to see it raised, and the well deserving players react, is always a beautiful moment. Adam Burish slightly ruined the elegance with his interview, because as much as I hate Chris Pronger, chirping him right after you've got the holy grail just doesn't make much sense. Dude, you are Adam Burish, he is Chris Pronger.

I was thrilled to see Marian Hossa show he wasn't a curse, and happy to see that Joel Quinville split up Toews and Kane. That spread it out and Prongs can't play 45 minutes a game. Duncan Keith is a beauty, as is his partner Brent Seabrook.

As much as I was hoping to see the Flyers come away hoisting the Cup, I wasn't disappointed. Briere, Giroux, Gagne, Carter, Carle; players I love to watch play didn't completly screw up (well, their first line was a combined -21, ouch) and made an entertaining series. Let's all be honest here to, a little goaltending in the Cup Finals woulda been nice.

So, with exams approaching, this won't be near the top of the list. Once the summer hits, I'll put much more of an effort. There is so much more to write about in the hockey world that I will catch up on for sure! Perhaps more detail on how I though the Finals went, and maybe even some thoughts on FIFA 2010. It's only day 2, but I've been enjoying it a tad, a good study period.

Puck drop is soon arriving for the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals. Doesn't that have an ring to it? I just picture this deep voice unnecessarily announcing it. I don't know if I'm making any sense, but it makes sense in my head...

I am quite interested in seeing how this goes. Philadelphia I feel in over their head in roster ways, so in that sense, I think 4 days was too long for the wheeling team, they needed to continue to roll. But then I think about the injuries and rest that this team needed. So that leaves you at the "hmm" stage. Either way I feel Chicago will come out and win this game.

You're not supposed to have sides as someone in the journalism world, so thankfully I'm just trying to get into it, not quite there. I am actually quietly cheering for the Flyers. They do have 3 players I can't stand (Pronger, Carcillo and Hartnell) but then they have the players I love (Giroux, Gagne, Briere.) Plus they beat out my Habs, and it's much better to say your team got knocked out by the Cup champs that year. Lastly, some people that I'm close to are from around there, and may as well cheer with them after cheering hard against them.

Around and hour to go. Yes.

A few weeks ago, I sat down and made the ultimate Montreal Canadiens 2011 roster. Making teams is something I have never been able shake from my childhood. I took all the players hailing from Quebec and tried to make the best team going. This is what it looks like:

Simon Gagne/ Daniel Briere/ Patrice Bergeron
David Perron/ Vincent Lecavalier/ Martin St. Louis
Alex Burrows/ Mike Ribeiro/ Jason Pominville
Claude Giroux/ Maxim Lapierre/ Ian Laperriere
Mathieu Darche/ Antoine Vermette/ Steve Bernier

Kris Letang/ Stephane Robidas
Francois Beauchemin/ Marc-Andre Bergeron
Marc-Edouard Vlasic/ Alex Picard
Bruno Gervais

Roberto Luongo
Marc-Andre Fleury
Martin Brodeur

Lots to pick from for forwards, and 3 no brainer goaltender choices. Defenceman though? Not so much. The only player to be snipped from the D, was Mathieu Roy.

The 2010 Stanley Cup finals are set, the Philadelphia Flyers will play the Chicago Blackhawks. To think that the Flyers made it into the playoffs in the last game of the regular season in the shootout is crazy. As hard it was to see them knock out my Habs, it is kind of a neat story. Michael Leighton was spectacular in the Montreal series, and his interview after the game really showed how much it meant to him. Now you've got the Chicago Blackhawks, and hopefully you have seen the Blackhawks TV segment with them playing Mario Kart on the Wii. I laughed through the whole thing just because you see these young men taking a little kid-ish game so serious. Take the time to go to their website and watching those videos make you feel like you know that team a little better.

I can't see Philly hoisting the Cup this year, Chicago is just playing scary hockey right now. I'm saying Chicago in 6. Jonathan Towes playing hero throughout the entire series. Remember the Olympics?

Today, I had the honour to meet Mike Danton. I had written to him at the beginning of the year for support and I had left my email address in it. It only took saying my name for him to remember me, which was pretty neat. It turns out that he had tried to email me back but it had bounced back to him. We were both leaving but he is coming back and said to make sure to hear him talk. I hear people said he was really inspirational, so I am so glad he is going out and speaking about his past. It's a great step in the right direction.

Time to sit down and blog about hockey?! No way, I haven't been able to that since, well April 23rd. Last time I posted only one team was packing up after a short playoff season, the New Jersey Devils. With all 1st round series' done, I finished at a questionable 50% for my predictions. 1 for 4 in the East (ouch) and 3 for 4 in the West. It was spectacular to watch Jaroslav Halak steal the show, and start history for the Habs 2010 season. All I can hope for now, is that he and the team can finish in a very memorable way. When predicting the Buffalo/Boston series, it was really the biggest crapshoot. The injury to Tomas Vanek really didn't help much for the Sabres. At least it has made for an entertaining 2nd round series vs. the Boston Bruins. Ottawa made things interesting but ultimately lost out. People mention the injuries to Michalek and Kovalev, but remember Filip Kuba was also out with an injury. He is a consistent d-man, that the Sens really could have used.

So onto the 2nd round, half of which is done. To be quite honest, I haven't caught as much hockey as I'd like to this series. I caught a nasty flu, and just general mayhem has insued. It's good though, it's life. There is not much point in predicting, so let's just sit back and enjoy the games. The Montreal/Pittsburgh series os tied at 2, who would have known. Detroit refuses to quit, although they really need to start in game 1, rather than the verge of elimination. Philadelphia just scored in first OT, the goal coming from Simon Gagne. That has forced a game 5. Now I just need to get to the remote an switch to CBC to see the Vancouver/Chicago game...

April 23rd, 2010 (2)

I figured not to make a big cluster of everything. The last post was NHL playoff hockey while this is more random news and happenings for the non playoff world. First off, you should see this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QL2EgTWEf8

Realize the time Thomas Deruns did it, then the score, and then finally realize that he did it in what is their Stanley Cup finals. Simply unreal. I did a little reserch on this player; he played for Switzerland this Olympics and has played in Switzerland for his entire pro career, playing for Servette Geneve since 2002.

One of the neatest thngs to happen this week was recieveing a letter from Toronto Marlies/Leafs defencemen prospect, Phil Oreskovic. He has a storng career ahead of him, and I think he is a great player. He replied to my letter, saying:

Dear Ryan
Thank you for your letter. I'm sorry this has taken so long to get back to you. I appreciate my fans sincerely and take nothing for granted. Your continued support means the world to me.
Your Friend
Phil Oreskovic

I think that is a pretty cool thing to say. For someone of his profession do that is nice to see. I feel that too many players in today's game do not take what they have for granted so it truly is remarkable for him to say such things. I know around Toronto he has a tremedous reputation, and you can clearly see how in this note. So thank you Mr. Oreskovic for being such a class act.

The team I predicted to go all the way was put out in 5 games... in the first round of playoffs. Slightly rattled to say the least. That is why you've got to love hockey in April. Who knew that Brian Boucher would out perform all-star Martin Brodeur? I thought Ilya Kovalchuk would be like, "oh hey playoffs, I should be the player I can be so I can get that nice ring, it would help out my swag." He didn't do too much. A very mediocre series for him. He played around 22 minutes a game, scored 2 goals and 5 points. Good offensive numbers but he was also 0 when it came to plus minus. It's great scoring 5 points but if you;re going to let the other team have 5 of their own, there is not much gain. Like I said in my predictions, I hoped Zach Parise would play like he did in the Olympics. Disappointingly enough, he didn't manage to do so. These aren't all the factors the led to the fall of the Devils, but certainly 2 big ones. Let's now hope San Jose can get by Colorado, to make me lot only half stupid. Thornton, Heatley, Marleau... play better then Pavelski's line, s'all I'm saying.

The Boston Bruins are down 3-1 in their series and could be eliminated tonight. One more potential upset, although this may not be a big surprise. It also looks like the young Finnish goaltender for the Chicago Blackhawks, Antti Nemi has played solid with back to back shutouts. That shaky goal in the first game didn't get to him, which is great for the Hawks.

Montreal is up on Washington 2-1 with the 2nd period just ending. My inner Habness is clinging on for dear life. Low expectations always result to better surprises, right?

I'm not very impressed with the refereeing in the Montreal/Washington game. Perhaps I am being biased, but after watching replay's, I'm not so sure. The goal where Mike Knuble was just on the fringe of the crease was certainly questionable, but I do believe that it was not the correct call. If Jaroslav Halak did want to move up anymore, the was no possible way of doing so. And let's be honest, do you really think Halak wanted to be where he was with that shot being taken where it was? Then there was the one where Hal Gill "shoved" a Washington Capital into Halak. I felt that the the play should have been whistled down at least. Not finished there, before Alex Ovechkin's shot went across the line, he speared Halak into the net. That was defiantly spearing or goaltender interference. Plus there was the call on Benoit Pouliot where it was just another slash that would usually go unnoticed by the ref. I can understand Mike Cammalleri's first slash where he broke Carlson's stick but when it happens twice, you've got to let it go. I mean, I can break those sticks with little effort, so really it's barley a slash. Are you telling me if Chris Pronger did that he's be called? No way. Plus, that play led to Ovechkin skating to his bench with the broken stick. I don't care if it was harmless, because I know it was, but it's still a penalty in the rule book. Oh well, perhaps it was just me. I was glad to see the OT winner go in clean. Montreal should be happy going into the Bell Centre tied with Washington.

TSN did a beautiful piece on Taylor Pyatt before the Phoenix vs. Detroit game. I've been a fan of his while he played on the Vancouver and became an even bigger supporter of his since the incident last year.

Phoenix just grabbed the lead quickly. Hockey and studying for me for the rest of the day. The hockey I suppose evens out the crummy studying!

And to think I simply went out to the kitchen to get a bowl of Froot Loops. I thought I had time! But no, Peter Regin had to score just 18 seconds into the first period. Thankfully my timing with the Froot Loops wasn't all to awful, and I was able to see the reply just after the orginal goal. The Froot Loops were well worth it by the way, I had to get seconds.

The Penguins were able to eventually get the win in a great game. Sidney Crosby played great, scoring a goal and setting up the game winner. Heck, he even tried to impersonate Roberto Luongo with a diving save. Luongo's was better, we all know that but still, very impressive Mr. Crosby. Monster Andy Sutton at 6'6 landed a huge hit on defenceman Jordan Leopold. Sutton was clearly trying to put Leopold through the boards, but interestingly enough, he was the one to "go through the boards." Leopold stayed down for a bit, and left the game; more information on his status will be available today. The hit was clean, just very nasty.

It was a hard night to decide what game to watch. The Pittsburgh and Ottawa game was high intensity, but I had more intrest in the Philly/NJ game. Channel flip I did do. New Jersey was able to get the win, to even up the series one a peice. All games last night actually went in favor for my predictions. Well except, the Nashville game, but the was game one of a best of seven series.

So Montreal takes on Washington in game 2. I would like nothing more then a 2-0 series lead for my 16th birthday. I hope to see Ovechkin be the same player he was last game, and Jaroslaov Spacek do the same. It should be a dandy.

April 16th, 2010 (2)

With my first round predictions done and up, that leaves the next rounds to, well predict. Here I go:

2nd Round:
Pittsburgh (4) over Washington (1) in 7
New Jersey (2) over Buffalo (3) in 5

San Jose (1) over Los Angeles (6) in 5
Chicago (2) over Detroit (5) in 6

Another classic between Washington and Pittsburgh, and Sidney Crosby again proves is amazingness. He has proved over and over again that he leads team victory. It's a thriller no doubt, again and will be awesome just like last year. New Jersery handles Buffalo because Martin Brodeur realizes the goalie he is. He somehow out duels Ryan Miller. Zach Parise will be the player he is destined to be, like he is in an American sweater. In the West, San Jose gets by LA in 5, but all games are scarily close. Chicago's skill is just too great over Jimmy Howard and the aging Red Wings.

3rd Round:
New Jersey (2) over Pittsburgh (4) in 6
San Jose (1) over Chicago (2) in 7

Everyone on New Jersey elevates their game, and everything good must come to an end. As unreal as it would be to see the Penguins make the Cup finals 3 years in a row, it just won't happen. Parise and Brodeur continue to lead the way, with a wonderful supporting cast to help along the way. As great as Chicago is, I think San Jose will get past narrowly because they have the best first line going and are well coached, plus the have home advantage.

The Stanley Cup Finals:
New Jersey (2) over San Jose (1) in 6

I'm scared about this pick, but I'm taking the New Jersey Devils for the 2010 Stanley Cup Champions. They have one of the greatest goaltenders of all-time, and despite his shaky play of late, he is going to realize that he is playing for the Stanley Cup. We all saw how much Zach Parise wanted that gold medal in February and he played like a champion. They have Travis Zajac, and Ilya Kovalchuk for goals, alongside Parise. Then they have David Clarkson, Jamie Langenbrunner, Brian Rolston, Jay Paldonfo, and the list goes on. They have the right roster to win the Cup. There defencemen are no wheres impressive, but you know what you are going to get night in and night out. All 6 of their defenders are consistent.

April 16th, 2010

Without out a doubt, this is one of the best time of the year. What really can be better than playoff hockey, every night for the next 2 months? It is slightly tiring though. I made a big mistake last night attempting to stay up and watch the Vancouver/Phoenix game after the thrill of the Montreal game. It certainly has been an interesting to see the finals of the games. I would have never guessed Colorado would have beat San Jose and Montreal beat Washington in the first game.

I made my picks a day before the playoffs, and figure although late, it would still make sense to post them. The teams I have picked to go on past the first round haven't won a game yet. Oh dear, plus I'm starting to doubt my pick for the Stanley Cup champion... already.

1st round:
Washington (1) over Montreal (8) in 5
New Jersey (2) over Philadelphia (7) in 6
Buffalo (3) over Boston (6) in 6
Pittsburgh (4) over Ottawa (5) in 6

San Jose (1) over Colorado (8) in 4
Chicago(2) over Nashville (7) in 5
Los Angeles (6) over Vancouver (3) in 7
Detroit (5) over Phoenix (4) in 6

Not many surprises here, actually almost the same as TSN (I picked before their show, I promise!) The only first round upsets are Los Angeles over Vancouver and that is so up in the air. I just feel that LA has the right amount of youngsters and vetrens, and Vancouver lacks skill defensivley wise. The other "upset" is Phoenix losing to Detroit but I think everyone sees Detroit getting by. Also, it looks like I failed on the San Jose/Colorado series. I called the sweep, and Colorado won the first game.

April 9th, 2010

Two nights ago, the New York Rangers took on the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game ended in a 5-1 win for the Blue Shirts and I was able to catch some of the game. What made the game, was 28 year old Aaron Voros scoring the last goal 12 minutes into the 3rd period. It was his 3rd goal of the season and 18th of his NHL career. He doesn't score often, so he doesn't get much practice when it comes to celebrations. What he did after the gaol though was gold. Remember, this was to put them up by 4 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He simply smashed his sticked against the boards. It was great, how many people slam their sticks into the glass after a goal? All I have to say is, take that Alexander Ovechkin.

To my disappointment, Montreal was unable to get the point they needed to lock up their playoff spot last night vs. Carolina. It will take a lot for the Habs to loose it, but it really would have been nice if they could have managed to pull off the win. They have a chance again vs. a much more difficult opposition, Chicago to clinch a berth. New York (the Rangers, not the Islanders, duh) have an important home and home vs. Philadelphia that may decide who gets into the post season. Unfortunately, no hockey is on any channels I have, but NHL.com has the game at 2-1 for New York after 1 period of play.

In other hockey news, Alexei Ponikarovsky of the Pittsburgh Penguins was suspended for the remainder of the season (all 2 games!) for a hit from behind on Islanders, Josh Bailey. What blew my mind while reading about this, is that Ponikarovsky will be losing more than 20,000 dollars over this! I never thought much of how much money the players lose when suspended. Let's be honest though, I imagine 20 grand isn't much to him. So, Mr. Dan Carcillo, how much have you lost over the years?

March 5th, 2010

A couple of former Halifax Mooseheads were able to make it into the hockey world the past week. First in the NHL, where the 23-year-old, American goaltender Jeremy Duchense made his NHL debut with the Philadelphia Flyers. He has been the 7th goaltender used by the Flyers the season. He was put in the early going of the 3rd period after Brian Boucher was pulled. He faced 4 shots, and allowed one goal. He was a late call up for Philadelphia and interestingly enough, the night before Duchense was pulled in his AHL game after allowing a goal from centre ice. When he was picked in the 4th round of the '05 draft, I doubted he would ever become a NHL goaltender. Well, he got a chance to do so, and is a step closer to being a part of the show.

The other Moosehead who made news, was current player, Gabriel Desjardins who was named to the U18 Team Canada roster last week. He, along his teammates will compete in Belarus this week. Congrats and best of luck to him.

The playoffs are a week away, and there is quite the interesting battle for the last couple of spots in the East. Atlanta doesn't have enough time left, as they only have 3 games compared to Philly's and Montreal's 4 and are 3 points from 8th. I fell that Montreal is safe because of the extra game and the way Jaroslav Halak has been playing. I've been able to watch his past two shutouts and he has been wonderful. The way the Habs have been playing isn't great but they must be gaining confidence is their goaltender situation, but certainly not themselves. One player I feel who has risen his game though is Andrei Kostitsyn. He has been playing well along the boards and is in the right places. He has always seemed to be average but his play of late has shown his potential.

New York I feel will be able to sneak into the 8th place somehow, which leaves Philadelphia and Boston to duel for the 7th and 9th. It is hard to say who will be the winners, if Boston had Marc Savard then without a doubt it's Boston but will they be able to play well enough the next 3 games to get by? The win vs. Toronto was a sweater but they pulled through, but now have to face the 1st place Caps, twice. 3rd place, Buffalo is in there future to, and the Hurricanes who manage to be only 8 points behind the Bruins could surprise them.

Then again, Philadelphia has only 3 games left and have to trust that Brian Boucher can keep them in the playoffs. They have the hard working Maple Leafs and then an oh so important back-to-back vs. the New York Rangers. This whole thing is up for grabs but I see Philadelphia finishing 9th, New York 8th, and Boston 7th. Really though, who honestly knows whats going to go down? At least it's a short wait to see!

Jim Playfair went a little wild last night at a call Jamie Koharski made in the Abbotsford Heat/Hamilton Bulldogs game. His player JD Watt was called for a questionable goaltender interference, and that seemed to set fire with Playfair. He broke one sick threw it and then pulled of his suit jacket. I'm not sure what that was to prove, I wasn't the least bit intimidated by him ripping off his jacket. To add further affect (probably a may as well moment at this point) grabbed a stick from a player on the bench and snapped that. I got a little chuckle from Shawn Weller's reaction (player to Playfairs left, #29) as he seemed a tad worried about being injured. Playfair received a fine and suspension, defiantly deserved.

I haven't been watching too much hockey of late. Saturday night I was looking forward to watch Travis Zajac take on the Habs and was able to catch some of the game. Earth Hour somehow snuck into this equation and I did miss the 2nd period. I felt like a nice person helping the Earth and all, but horrible timing Mother Nature. I mean, I didn't even win Mall Madness during the hour.

March 20th, 2010

Last night I had the honor to meet the ex Habs, Patrice Brisebois and Stephane Richer. They were very kind, and full of laughter. It is a truly incredible experience to meet people you look up too. Mr. Richer said he enjoyed going out the night before for a "really nice" dinner with Brisebois, at Wendy's. "Free fries!" he said in his french accent, laughing. Both posed for a photo with me, and signed a few things. It is great to see Stephane is such high spirits, and full of life. I can't imagine what it was like overcoming depression. As for Brisebois, I find it very interesting that he was the whipping boy in Montreal back in the day. You look at Mike Green nowadays and he is worshiped for his offensive skill, even if he lacks some defensively. Brisebois earned the nickname, "Breeze-By" because fans often thought players would simply breeze by him. He contributed so much offense so the Canadiens, and really wasn't all that bad when it came to defensive. He was a great player and I wish him all the best with his racing!

I am slightly ticked at the James Wisniewski suspension. Colin Campbell has to be at least consistent when handing out suspensions. Sure, it was an ugly hit, but you're telling me that it was 8 times uglier than the hit on Marc Savard delivered by Matt Cooke? I even thought the Alex Ovechkin hit was worse to watch than this. I do believe Wisniewski deserved a suspension, for the charge. But as far I know, there still wasn't an official rule stating the disallowing the hit to the head. In my opion you suspened 4 games for the charge. 8 games is far to much, all things considering. The hit Seabrook landed on Perry was to the head an no call. Colin Campbell, you nailed it when saying it was a retaliatory hit, but it wasn't for head. In the video I posted, pause it at 1:15. Wisniewski's shoulder is more into the chest of Seabrook. Also, people say it was a huge interference call, I have to disagree, although the he did not touch the puck, at the poit where Wisniewski starts to skate to make the hit, Duncan Keith is looking right at Seabrook and at the point of impact the puck had just been rimmed around the boards by him. Interference, but it's not like the puck was in the other end like Quinville has been whining about. James Wisniewski deserves to be dissapointed at the 8 games and way to go Bob Murray for standing up for your team.

Yet another hit to debate. More people will probably will be interested in the latest due to the fact that the hit was delivered by none other, Alexander Ovechkin. When I saw the play, I instantly thought back to the Maxim Lapierre hit on Scott Nichol. The only real difference is that Brian Campbell was in the defensive zone with Ovechkin forechecking, where as Nichol was in the offensive zone. Lapierre had his hands a little farther apart then Ovechkin but think what's stronger, a stick or hands/arms? I felt that Ovechkin deserved the same as Lapierre but we all knew that there was no way in heck that Colin Campbell was going to suspend Ovi for four games. I'm sure he had a hard time giving him the 2. Alex Ovechkin did apolgize for the hit, but was dissapointed in the suspension. I think in the back of his head he realizes that he deserved it, but is more dissapointed in the fact that he'll miss 2 games of hockey. The dude loves the game.

All the talk is about the Matt Cooke's hit on Marc Savard. We all know how nasty looking it was and all feel for Savard. Having a concussion is horrible. I don't know the exact severeness of his concussion but it's bad. Earlier in my own season this year, I suffered a 2.5 concussion. For those who don't know, concussions are classed from 1 to 3, 3 being most severe. Words cannot describe the feeling this kind of injury gives. I spent the first week with my head under a pillow, and having nightmares about any sort of noise or light. The focus is on the punishment of Cooke, but I feel just so bad for Marc Savard. I wish him all the best in his recovery.

Since I am human, I will put in my input about what should have happened to Matt Cooke. As soon as the hit was landed, Cooke should have been worried about getting jumped, and should have. I don't care who was on the ice for Boston, it could be little Brad Marchand for I care. Someone should have stepped in and tuned him. Let him get up and fight you fairly. Once that happens, Cooke should have been ready for another fight, and then another. I don't care the score or 2 points at that point of the game. If I was on Boston my concern at that point would be Marc Savard and making sure Matt Cooke got what he deserved. I'm not a fan of fighting fire with fire but there is an instance I would accept. It would have been sicking to watch, but it was already sick enough.

There is no rule where hitting to the head is a penalty, so I don't understand why everyone is calling for a suspension. How are you able to suspend a guy for something that's not a rule? It's just not possible, no matter the type of reputation the player has. Colin Campbell could have punished Cooke for attempt to injure but in my opinion there are not many circumstances that a hit could fall under that category. As a player myself, when you go for a big hit, you're not thinking of hurting him, you're thinking of the huge momentum shift it will give your team. Matt Cooke despite the reputation could have been just going for just that, we don't and never will know what was going on inside his head when he made the hit. I sure hope he was going for the big hit but after watching some past plays of his, I have begun to wonder what his motive is.

March 4th, 2010

If you've noticed, the posts have slowed down a bit. I haven't had the time to update nightly which disappoints me just as much as you, trust me I know, it's killing you. I'll still post the games I was able to see, or games that interested me, but for the most part, won't cover every game anymore. I'm having major withdrawal from the Olympics. What an amazing 2 weeks of memories we were as a world able to witness.

Yesterday was the trade deadline, and we were all waiting for the big trade to happen. And it happ... didn't happen. A bunch of depth players swapped and players being reunited to their former teams. Let me break down the trades that interested me.

Matt D'Agostini (Montreal) to St. Louis for Aaron Palushaj
I love the play of D'Agostini but often wondered if he would ever amount to anything much more then what he is now. I guess Gauthier didn't want to wait to see. I don't know much about Palushaj but he was a 2nd rounder in '07 where D'Agostini was I believe a 5th rounder in 2005. Palushaj also has much better numbers in the AHL the D'Agostini. This trade is a wait and see, to decide who got the better deal, although if you look at the numbers, Montreal seems to have edge.

To Boston: Dennis Seidenberg, Matthew Bartkowski
To Flordia: Craig Weller, Byron Bitz, 2nd round pick

I would have never traded Bitz. I heard he was traded and was rattled. Then I saw who he was traded for and was further rattled. Sure, Boston picked up an average defender but I believe Bitz was too much to give up, let alone with a 2nd round draft pick. Flordia with the win here.

Eric Belanger (Washington) to Minnesota for a 2nd round draft pick
Again, Washington gave too much up for a depth player, especially since they have such incredible depth up front in the first place. I believe Belanger deserves a 4th rounder considering Scott Walker was picked up with a 7th rounder.

Dustin Boyd (Calgary) to Nashville for a 4th rounder
Love this trade! I think my favorite trade of the day. You're telling me Eric Belanger gets a 2nd rounder where Dustin Boyd gets a 4th rounder. Nashville got the deal here, Boyd will be a very solid NHL'er for many years.

And here is the "blockbuster" trade of the day, although I left the one I felt was the real one last...
Lubomir Visnovsky (Edmonton) to Anahiem for Ryan Whitney and a 6th rounder
Well, people say these to defencemen are underrated but in my humble opinion, they are both overrated. I have never thought too much of Visnovsky, or even Whitney were just slightly above average players. Nothing to really get excited about. But remember before you jump on my back, it's my humble opinion! I'd be pretty bummed out if I were Whitney by the way. Out of the 30 teams in the NHL, he was traded to the Oilers. Ouch. Unreal youthful roster... but they can't live up to it.

Woltek Wolski (Colorado) to Phoenix for Peter Muller and Kevin Porter

And Colorado gets even younger. They are taking the right step in direction. I like this trade for both teams. I mean, Woltek Wolski is a fantastic player and will be a great asset for the Coyotes. Peter Muller had seemed to hit a wall, not producing much but still is a great (I'll say it again, young) player. Colorado will be a top team with the further addition of these 2 (young) players in a couple years. Wolski wouldn't be in the picture by then, so it makes sense to trade him. Give this trade 5 out of 5 stars for both teams. Thank you for making my day, and putting a smile on my face. Phoenix and Colorado. You have done well.

Canada over USA 3-2... 'nuff said.
Alright, if you didn't see this game and live within the United States of America or Canada, shame on you. You missed something called history. Oh baby, there was more emotion in that game then there is right now in The Bachalor, and that is saying a lot. Everyones Facebook status after the game was about Sidney Crosby and how amazing he was. Was I ever tempted to put in mine "Jonathan Towes and Ryan Getzlaf <3" but figured I'd better not disturb everyone. Let's hop into reality and admit Sid the Kid did not shine through the entire tournament (minus the Swiss shootout win) but did he ever come through the clutch. We all know what went on the entire game, so there is no need to say who scored and assisted. What matters is that Canada won gold in OT, and Canada gave us all a beatiful memory. I love it.

The NHL starts tonight and the trade deadline is on Wedensday, looking forward to that!

February 27th, 2010

There is not much to say, other than way to go Canada's women team! I was never able to quite get into the games, I just didn't find them all that interesting (does that make me a bad Canadian?) but watched the final game and was thrilled with the ending.

USA over Finland 6-1
Well, by the time I was able to turn the TV on and watch it, the game was already of of reach at 4-0. Ryan Malone opened the scoring just 2 minutes in, and just 4 minutes later Zach Parise scored an powerplay goal. It didn't stop there with 4 more goals over the next 5 minutes. 2 of those came from Patrick Kane. In the 3rd, Antti Miettinen scored the one goal for Finland. Rather than watch the onslaught, I opted for NHL 10 on the good ole xbox. Then my power went out...

Canada over Slovakia 3-2
I was losing in it. We were hit with a storm that was not strong enough to cancel school, but managed to knock out power once we all got home. Like really? Pacing around the house, it was all worry. Thankfully it came back on in time. The first frame had everyone feeling good I'm sure. Patrick Marleau showed off his hand eye, to tip in the first goal of the game. Brendan Morrow decided to show up Marleau tipping one past Halak in even better style. The second came along and Ryan Getzlaf who was without a doubt has elevated his game alongside Corey Perry and Morrow, sniped a backhander in. The crowd got just a little cocky, or just excited. Slovakia decided to be some punks, Lubomir Visnovsky put one in to make it a little closer. Then Michael Handzus made everyone panic. Roberto Luongo (LUUUU) absolutely robbed Canuck teammate near the end. After this tournament is all said and done, we'll be looking back at that save and giving it the title of best save of the tourny.

The Finns play the Slovaks at 11 o'clock here. Really can't see myself staying up for this. I had a hard enough time with last nights!

Februaury 25th, 2010

I was able to catch the entire US/Swiss game, the 3rd of Canada's win and even managed to stay up for a period of the Finland/Czech Republic. Switzerland showed through the entire tournament that they were a strong team. It was never luck that got them to the quarters, but just plain skill.

Canada over Russia 7-3
If you were able to figure out that I wasn't lucky enough to witness any goals in this game, well good for you. All 10 goals took place in either the 1st period or 2nd. Ryan Getzlaf opened up the scoring and Danny Boyle 10 minutes later followed that up with a powerplay goal. Canada didn't finish there, Rick Nash was able to pot one in just seconds later after the Nash goal. Ex-Sabre, Dimitri Kalinin scored for Russia making the lead a little less comfortable. Hard worker Brendan Morrow finished the scoring in the 1st with his own, assists going to Boyle and Duncan Keith. I'm loving the Morrow/Richards/Towes line by the way. Absolutely loving it. Going in the 2nd, I'm sure Canadians were feeling pretty darn good. 5-1, thanks to Corey Perry, 6-1, thanks to Shea Weber, but ah Maxim Afinogenov had to spoil the parade scoring Russia's 2nd of the night. Despite that, Canadians almost certainly were feeling amazing. Even though 7-3, I myself was still nervous. Russia has Evgeni Malkin, Alex Ovechkin, Pavel Datsyuk, ect. 4 goals isn't all that much considering that. Canada proved to be the better team shutting down everything in the 3rd. Things got a little chippy near the end. Dan Boyle slewfooted Alex Semin, I'm sure in hope to get into a slapping fight, tehe. Dirty move but he got away with it, that's the main thing right? So up next, Roberto Luongo (LUUUU) will face Sweden... I mean, what?!?! Slovakia?!

Slovakia vs. Sweden 4-3
No sir, I did not have the superpowers to stay up and watch a game that starts at like 1AM, disappointingly enough eh? I was pretty surprised at this. Sweden was a favorite coming in. Then again, Slovakia beat Russia. Slovakia came out gunning, scoring the first 2 goals of the game... after more than 20 minutes played. The first from superstar Marian Gaborik and the second from Andrej Sekera. Sweden made the game closer because Henrik Zetterberg put one in, the assist coming from Tobias Enstrom. To make people confused and worry the Swedes, Pavol Demitra scored giving his team a 2 goal lead going into the 3rd. Sweden must have came out hoping to close in. Thomas Kopecky ruined that plan. From there the game was for the most part, out of reach. Daniel Alfredsson did score at 9:39 but clearly it wasn't enough.

USA vs. Switzerland 2-0
Despite my duel citizenship, I wanted the Swiss to win. Just because it would be funny to watch the Americans lose, they would be embarrassed. The big reason though would be to laugh at my American friend. I guess I'll get the chance to do that in a couple days... hopefully. Zach Parise played a strong game, as did Chris Drury. All skeptics better have changed their mind about this heart and hustle guy. Jonas Hiller played unreal, the MVP of the game without a doubt. Other than his bat-in goal at the end of the 1st, he played incredible. That was an interesting play. Everyone who saw that, you're shaking your head in agreement right now. Switzerland was saved by the bell... er I mean buzzer. 0.1 is far to close for comfort. One of the wildest plays I've had to watch. Switzerland had me and their entire nation clinging onto hope. It wasn't until Parise put in the empty netter that hope was lost. USA deserved the win without a doubt, but it still would have been a sight to see them lose!

Finland over Czech Republic 2-0
I was kind of bored watching the first period. Perhaps because I was tired? Or maybe because there was no goal scoring going on. Good thing I didn't stay up and watch the 2nd, because I wouldn't have been able to see the puck go over the line between the posts during those 20 minutes later. It wasn't until the 3rd that the scoreless tie was broke. Niklas Hagman was the clutch dude, scoring a PP goal. 6'0'' 193 pounder Valtteri Filppula scored the empty net goal to wash away the hope or the Czechs. Hopefully this was not the last time we had to see Jaromir Jagr on North American ice. Gosh, I'd love to see him suit up in a Pens uni, and grow an even better mullet than he has now. That would be simply beautiful.

The woman are only a few short minutes from battling the United States of America for gold. Let's all hope to see yet another gold medal to our count. Wonderful Wednesday was well, wonderful. It was great to see all those medals from the women, I felt really bad for the short track team from Korea though. I would have rather just to lose than get DQ'ed like that. I'm really hoping to see Joannie Rochette pull it off. She deserves it.

February 24th, 2010

Rattled. Rattled is the one word to describe my current feeling. So freakin' rattled. I have a game that is timed so flipping well that I will be lucky if I get to see the last 5 minutes of the third period. So rattled.

A reports came out awhile ago that Toronto Maple Leaf Mikhail Grabovski was involved in a bar fight while in Vancouver. He was put in jail for the night, and later released to... his parents! I think that is just plain gold. To add insult to injury (no pun intended) his boss, Brian Burke released a statement calling Grabovski stupid. This story is just straight up hilarious if you ask me.

But onto the hockey. The NHL starts up soon, but let's be honest. No one is actually thinking about that.

Canada over Germany 8-2
8-2 just sounds better. Does anyone else agree? I was kinda happy that Klinge was able to put that in late in the third. Canada dominated. The most important thing to this game is the fact that Mike Babcock has seemed to figure out and more importantly settle on a line for their star player, Sidney Crosby. I'm not a big fan of Eric Staal but he has proved to be there, and played well with Sidney last night. Jarome Iginla is an unbelievable player, and played well with him too. Shea Weber scored and interesting goal; not many people knew what happened. Weber managed to fire the puck so hard that it went through it! There was not hole, he just simply put it through. Impressive to say the least.

Switzerland over Belarus 3-2
What a good game to watch. A competitive game. Belarus' goaltender, Andrei Mezin played okayish. As TSN's commutators pointed out time after time, his rebound control was shaky. Belarus managed to to put it into the shootout despite being outshout heavily. While in the shootout, Romano Lemm decided to make up for his earlier penalty, scoring the winner.

Czech Republic over Latvia 3-2
Didn't see this game, but just looking at the score makes me scratch my head. Shouldn't have the Czechs win by a little more that this?

Slovakia over Norway 4-3
A nasty hit took place in this game. Unsure of who the player is that received the hit, but he had an MRI taken and he is fine. Ole Kristian Tollefsen landed the hit.

If Canada wants to win, they'll have to keep the puck down low, and Roberto Luongo will have to be solid. Can't wait to see... the highlights. I'm hoping Switzerland can play the spoiler vs. USA. It would make a good story. It is scoreless in the 2nd, although they are getting outshot quite badly.

February 22nd, 2010

Thankfully I didn't miss much in the hockey world while I was away. Oh wait, snap I did. I managed to see bits and pieces of games throughout the weekend, but not enough to say much about them. I was lucky enough to witness the monster hit by none other than Alexander Ovechkin on Jaromir Jagr. My mother who knows just enough hockey to follow my games, and knows some of the players that I like but was still able to explain that that hit was the turning point. TSN later backed her up, I could not have been prouder of my mother.

I'll just start with the Canada game that took place last night...
USA over Canada 5-3
Rats. Ryan Miller is a champ, 'nuff said. Although Martin Brodeur was shaky to say the least, Ryan Miller is the reason the Americans won. Not only was US out shot, but they we're out chanced. Miller didn't just make routine saves all night, he had to make hard saves time after time. David Backes continues to play very well for the States. I'm sure Steve Yzerman would like Brendan Morrow to take note. To toot my own horn also, Chris Drury is having a strong tournament. All the doubters have to have changed their minds by now. A big thanks to Backes is needed from Drury though.
As for the goaltender situation, it looks likes Roberto Luongo will start vs. the Germans. A smart call by Babcock but I think we should step a pace back before we jump on Marty's back. Sure, he didn't have a great game last night. That homerun that turned to a infield grounder was the highlight but the dude is an incredible goalie. Canada has the ability to throw either him, Luongo and even Marc-Andre Fleury (I've said all along he should be the backup) and have a fantastic chance of winning. Who cares who is in net? Either way you should receive stellar goaltending.

As a finish writing this, I realize I won't be able to write about the other games that have taken place over the past couple days. Okay well, I just don't feel like it, haha. Take the time to check out the highlights of the Czech Republic and Russia game (Russia won 4-2, by the way.) You'll want to watch Ovechkin's hit over and over. Also, last nights late game had Sweden over Finland 3-0. Loui Eriksson had 2 and Nick Backstrom had the other; Henrik Ludqvist picked up the shutout.

So hopefully I'll fall back in routine, as games are to take place tomorrow. I might have a post up tomorrow, but it's hard to say. Let's wing it.

February 19th, 2010

I missed the first couple of minutes of the opening period, because I had an urge to go to the gym and when I get those, well I need to take advantage of them. Thankfully, I didn't miss much, just a penalty but with Canada's powerplay there wasn't much worry of missing a goal.

Canada over Switzerland 3-2
Canada didn't play the way they should have. Brendan Morrow tried to put some energy into the game, but it seemed like it would only work with very shot dosages. With a 2-0 lead, thanks to San Jose Sharks Dany Heatley and Patty Marleau I'm sure we were relaxed and enjoying the game. 2-1 you were getting a little antsy and then 2-2 made you squeamish. It wasn't till near the end of the third for me reality hit. I thought they would pull out the regulation win. OT solved nothing and the shootout was nerve wracking. Gord Miller nailed it, Hillier had a good idea of what Canada's shooters would pull of, and Martin Brodeur had no sweet clue. Skill clearly took over and Cole Harbour native Sidney Crosby finished it off, giving us the 3-2 win.

USA over Norway 6-1
The first period was controlled by the States men, Phil Kessel having an unreal snipe and Chris Drury also finishing off one. This gave them a nice 2-0 lead going into the 2nd. The 2nd proved to be a head spinner. Norway played just as well as them, if not better. Still though, US managed to tie the period, at 1 apiece still giving them the same 2 goal lead heading into the third. There, USA decided to show who they really were, scoring 3 goals and shutting out Norway. Ryan Malone showed off his hand eye batting a goal in. It wasn't as impressive as Crosby's last night, but hey, his went in. Then veteran, Brian Rafalski scored 2 of his own, finishing off the up and down game at 6-1. Shots were 39-11.

Slovakia over Russia 2-1
Say what?! I said the same thing when I woke up and say this. My second thought was, "Curse you, Vancouver time difference!" Man I wish I could have seen this game, but here the game doesn't start till 1 in the morning. Not worth it, haha. Jaroslav Halak in total stopped 47 shots, and superstar Alexander Ovechkin was held off the scoresheet. He only went 1 for 3 in the shootout too! Marian Hossa scored midway through the 3rd to tie the game up, assists going to Pavol Demitra and younger brother Marcel Hossa. There were 14 attempts in the shootout and Pavol Demitra played the part of Sidney Crosby, scoring the winner.

I realize I managed to mention Sidney Crosby in all 3 of the game, and I'm not going to change that. That is what you get when you are the best player in the world. The usual 3 games take place today, but I am unsure if I'll be able to see any as I'm off to a hockey tournament. Which also means there won't be anymore posts for the rest of the week.

On a note that is not related to hockey, Tiger Woods is to have a statement in around 20 minutes on CTV. It shall be interesting to see what he says. Canada also now has 7 medals, thanks to Christine Nesbitt beating Annette Gerristen by 0.02 of a second. Way to be Mrs. Nesbitt!

February 18th, 2010

Three games took place at GM Place, ahem I mean Canada Hockey Place. I did exactly what I said I was going to do, watch the game with half attention. Much like what I am doing right now with the US/Norway game. It's 3-1 for the States, I'm hoping to see the Norwegians pull 'er through. Oh yeah. Chris Drury is being a very "key" player (quoted from Sporstnet.) Just saying... haha.

Finland over Belarus 5-1
The score doesn't look all that bad, and I applaud Belarus for that. If you watched the game however, you would know that it wasn't all that even. Shots were 45-12. Though, Belarus played well considering they are missing their two top players. Teemu Selanne was firing a lot, and the Koivu brothers picked up some points. Ranger Olli Jokinen opened up scoring with assists going to the elders, Selanne and Koivu. Then Flame's Niklas Hagman scored, an assist going to the younger Koivu and Joni Pitakien. Belarus started the scoring in the 2nd with Sergei Kostitsyn potting one, but was followed up by another goal by Hagman late in the period. Another assist going to Mikko Koivu. In the final frame, Finland took it home, scoring two more goals. Valtteri Filppula and Jarkko Ruutu being the contributors. Mikko Koivu picked yet another goal on the Filppula goal.

Sweden over Germany 2-0
Holy bad officiating Batman!! I feel really bad for Germany, they deserved to win this game. If Hecht had been able to put that goal in on the 5 on 3 instead of the crossbar and then seconds later, Christian Erhoff ringing a slopshot of the post this game would have went differntly. Then Ohlund's goal should have never counted. Tomas Griess without a doubt was interferred with. Mattias Ohlund had a solid shot but also half the net open because Griess was knocked out of postition. Dissapointing all around I think. Loui Eriksson scored the later goal and Henrik Lundqvist picked up the shutout.

Czech Republic over Slovakia 3-1
Didn't see this game or even the highlights, so can't say much. Jaromir Jagr was able to put a puck in the net, in the 2nd period. The other goal scorers for the Czech was Patrik Elias and Canadien's Tomas Plekanec. Marian Gaborik was the lone scorer for Slovakia.

The Canadian women copntinue to own it up. Watched the game yesterday and the States are just coming up so I'll watch a bit of that. The men's US vs. Norway game just finished up. USA decided to show the team they are and dominated the 3rd after an even 2nd. Brian Rafalski picked up 2 goals. More on the game tommorow.

Four years to the day since Martin Gerber stunned Canada. People are saying paybeck, but this kind of creeps me out. Hoping for a win, this game I'm sure will be more entertaining than Wednesday's but we're all I'm sure looking forward to Sunday!

Lidstrom/Weber

There are reasons I picked certain people, obviously. Patrice Bergeron just because of his faceoffs and rightness. Zbynek Michalek may or may not be a surprise but I feel he is one of the most underrated defenceman in the NHL with the Phoenix Coyotes. With him and Volchenkov on the ice, I wonder if a shot would even make it on net.

It's 1-0 halfway through the first for Finland as of right now, and Finland is controlling the play. Looks like it'll be a one-sided game.

Nothing is better then hanging out with friends, and enjoying a big hockey game like last nights. The only real downfall to that is that you often miss the little things, and don't have that close up analysis of the game as if you were to watch it alone. Good times all around though. Thankfully we were hit with a big snowstorm and school was cancelled, it would have been a walking zombie; I'm not a night owl at all, haha.

USA over Switzerland 3-1
I was cheering for Switzerland for 2 reasons. A they were playing the rival States, and B they were the underdog. It would have been awesome to see them win. It was still nice to see the Swiss play as well as they did. Their short little passes throughout the game were unreal! There give and go's were impressive, and overall their entire game was decent. Bobby Ryan's goal to open things up was a beaut and a little heart sinking. Backes and Tampa's Ryan Malone scored USA's 2nd and 3rd goals in the 2nd. They were held goalless in the third and Roman Wick of team Switzerland scored 9:45 into the 3rd, giving us a ray of hope. It turned out to be a little to late.

Canada over Norway 8-0
A friend texted me commenting on how well the Norwegians were actually playing. That was true, but I said that once the Canadians were able to one or two in, the floodgates would be released. It feels nice to call things, even though half the population would have said the same thing. After a scoreless 1st period (the shots were 14-4 mind me) the Canadians stormed out and potted 3 in the 2nd. Jarome Iginla, Dany Heatley and Mike Richards being the contributors. Then they were able to put 5 more in the 3rd, Ryan Getzlaf scored an assist going to Toews, Heatley put another one in, Corey Perry did too, and Iginla gave himself a hatty, scoring twice in the 3rd frame. All eyes were on Sidney Crosby, and he did not disappoint, having a 3 point night. A satisfying win to say the least.

Russia over Latvia 8-2
If I was on Latvia, I wouldn't be ashamed of saying that I lost to Russia 8-2. I though the score would be even more lopsided, I mean Russia is like an All-Star team and Latvia is like an AHL team. Snipers Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin each had a deauce and New Jerseys's Ilya Kovalchuk also had one. KHL'er Danis Zaripov opend the scoring 2 and a half minutes into the game. Both Latvia's goals came in the third, coming from 5'10", 185 pounder Herbets Vasilijevs and lefty Gints Ankipas.

I've stopped trying to be unbiased, because well Canada is awesome. Can't wait to see more Olympic hockey, 3 games are taking place today. Jay Onrait is having a hall-of fame performance right now on Olympic Morning. He is just absolutely hilarious right now, and just way to hyped up. I'll hopefully have another post today, with a combined Olympic team.

February 16th, 2010

I love that the Olympics don't have advertisements. The boards were refreshing and also quite trippy. They should have made them the vintage white with the red top and black puck marks. Plus, the goalies should still switch sides in the middle of the period, it would truly make the game epic.

So to finish the last 4 teams off...
Czech Republic: Tomas Fleischman
In my opinon, this Czechs are going into the Games with a very mediocre team. The entire 7 defencemen named to the roster are solid, but certainly not standouts. I wouldn't mind having Kaberle, Kuba, Michalek or Polok on my NHL team but when you look at the likes of Canada's and Russia's core you would dump them pretty quickly. Then you look at their forwards, and it is very much the same. Tomas Fleischman will be looked upon to continue his fantastic season into this tournament. He won't come out the point leader on the team, leave that to Jaromir Jagr but he may end up needing to provide the all important secondary scoring. If he is able to play great all the time, he may be able to spark some energy into the 3rd and 4th lines.

Sweden: Niklas Kronwall
I chose Kronwall because of very similar reasons of picking Luca Sbisa of the Swiss team. He won't be playing the big minutes but will need to play an impressive tournament. Fellow NHL teammate and Norris hogger, Nicklas Lidstrom will be the main D on the roster. If Kronwall can make the punishing hits he is able to land, then the rest of the team can go out and complete their roles. Looking down Sweden's roster, I am very impressed. They have players that are able to do certain roles very well. They are a force to be reckoned with.

Norway: Per-Age Skroder
A prety weak team, to say the least. They have two names you may able to recognize, Ole Kristian Tollefsen and Patrick Thoresen but unless you're a crazy hockey nut, that is about it. The player I chose I was able to see a couple of times at the World Championships and always impressed me. Per-Age Skroder is a 5'10" 203 pound left winger for Modo, in Sweden. Last year he was the leading point getter in the leaugue. This year in 47 games he has 33 points. He will be relied on to provide much of the scoring for Norway.

Canada: Jonathan Toews
So many people to choose from. It really is almost a lottery. I don't know who is raring to go and who is tired. I guess that is why we try to make educational guess! Jonathan Toews in a versatile player that should be counted on to kill penalties. He will provide the team with much energy, and without a doubt raise his game at this stage. He has proven his success and dedacation with Hockey Canada. Mike Babcock knows how good of a player he is, seeing him often in the NHL. Like many of the players I chose, he won't log huge numbers but without a doubt be very clutch. And I would be very surprised if Babcock didn't choose him to be in the shootout if needed. Toews better raise his game but let's hope everyone does on Team Canada, and watch our team take the gold as it should be!

Canada has been able to add another gold medal to these Games, picking up a gold in womans snowboard cross! Way to be. So, sit'er down, and enjoy the game we've all been waiting for. It would be kind of embarrising to see Canada loose to Norway, but I so suppose weirder things (not many) have happened in the world.

February 15th, 2010

Six games took place on the eve of the Olympic Break. With good news, Ryan Getzlaf is a go. He scored 4 points last night, enough said.

Ottawa over New York Islanders 4-3
The Islanders came into the 3rd period with the lead. Blake Comeau scored twice in the first to frames, along with Matt Moulson who is having a surprising season. Jarkko Ruutu was the only goal scorer for the Ottawa Senators in the 1st and 2nd periods, scoring his 10th of the campaign at 6:16 of the first. The Sens came out flying after the second intermission scoring 3 goals. Kovalev potted one in and Jason Spezza scored one on the powerplay. Mike Fisher scored the game winner with his 20th goal of the year, half way through the third.

Nashville over Pittsburgh 4-3
This one went to the ever entertaining shootout. To get to that point, 3 different Pens scored receptively for their team, and 3 different Preds scored for their respected team. Sidney Crosby opened the scoring with his 42nd of the year. Martin Erat followed that up with his own in the 2nd, but the hard working Matt Cooke followed it right up. Pittsburgh was unable to hold that lead, Jordin Tootoo scored immediately after Cooke's. In the 3rd period, Brooks Orpik scored his first of the season and Canadian Olympian Shea Weber followed that up too with a slapshot. In the shootout Dan Ellis stopped Letang and Crosby, while his teammates backed him up, not allowing Marc-Andre Fleury stop a single puck, going 2 for 2.

New York Ranger over Tampa Bay 5-2
Minnesota over Vancouver 6-2
Chicago over Columbus 5-4
Anaheim over Edmonton 7-3

So hopefully I'll get the last 4 teams up before the 2nd game starts. If I didn't I'll be angry at myself...

Switzerland: Luca Sbisa
Luca Sbisa is one of two players on Switzerland who will have represented their country both at the junior level, as well as at the Olympic level this year. I was tempted to pick the Canadian born Hnat Domenichelli but ultimately decided on Sbisa. He played well with the Swiss this Christmas and won't have a huge role with the men. Mark Streit and Yanick Weber I imagine will have the bigger roles but they can't play the entire game. If Sbisa can go out and play solid shifts and makes few mistakes, then Switzerland won't have to worry about the defense, epically with Anaheim Ducks starter Jonas Hiller, and will be able to focus more on offense.

Russia: Anton Volchenkov
Volchenkov was highly underrated is the early stages of his career. He now has been gaining reputation of being one of the best defencmen in the league. He dosen't show up to often on the scoresheet but does all the little things perfect. If you follow hockey, you know just how appreciated he is with the Ottawa Senators. If he does just what he does with the Sens, then Russia has a fantastic chance of a gold medal. They are so full of depth that everyone does have a small important role, and Volchenkov's may not have the glory that Alex Ovechkin's or Sergei Gonchar's have, but it is just as big, if not bigger than theirs.

Latvia: Martin Karsums
I'm not giving Latvia much of a chance of going anywheres, and lets face it if they do it will because their entire roster really, really, really stepped it up. To be honest, I would chose the Latvian fans as the key player. I was able to see just how much the Latvians love their team, no matter the score. Latvia is very much in the same boat with Belarus. They will need to be able to put the puck in the net, when given the rare opportunity. Martin Karsums was one of the few NHL players when invited to camp. He started the season playing for the Tampa's farm team, the Norfolk Admirals but decided to head on overseas and play in the KHL. He has always put up average numbers where ever he plays. Disappointingly, his name is no where as cool as fellow teammates Oskar Bartulis or Guntis Glavins but no matter what will be expected to do a lot while playing with Latvia.

USA: Chris Drury
A hard choice. This team is stacked full of great, young players which is why I decided to choose the veteran Chris Drury. I remember his play through the 2002 Winter Olympics and that in itself makes him a better player. He will be surrounded by the likes of Zach Parise, Phil Kessel and Patrick Kane. He doesn't need to worry much about scoring all the goals. He will provide calmness to the team and play constient when asked too. Drury will also be able to pick it up when others a slacking. He has had a pretty weak season thus far, but that won't come into effect with the players he will be surrounded by and the stage he's playing on.

Less than 24 hours to go! I can't wait. Props to Alex Bilodeau (pictured above) for giving us our first gold in Vancouver, it was a memorable moment to watch, that is for sure. Dale Begg-Smith is a loser too. Seems like a strange kid. Canada's women's team let in a goal vs. the Swiss. Still manged to pull away with a close 10-1 game. That puts them at 2 and 0, with 28 goals for with 1 against.

February 14th, 2010 (2)

With the men's Olympic hockey tournament coming up, I decided to do up a little opinion piece. I'm not about to do a detail analysis about where each country is going to finish because it really is so hard to tell. Plus they say all great journalists are not biased. Right now, it's just too hard not to be. I expect and hope Canada to bring 'er home; okay well they're already home so I guess just win gold. You got what I meant, hopefully. Right now I am urged to chant quite possibly the worst cheer ever... EH O, CANADA GO! Anyways I got a little rowdy and little off topic there, but no big deal.

So here is what I am going to do: name a player on each team that I feel will be a a key player and needs to perform exceptionally in order for their team to succeeded. I have decided to keep goaltenders out because the team with the hottest netminder has the best chance of a medal. Plus, for teams like Norway and Latvia their goaltenders will have to superheros to get anywhere so obviously they are the most key players on their respected team. Let's drop the puck.

Finland: Kimmo Timonen
The Finns are loaded with talented forwards and seem to have an overflow of impressive goalies. Looking down the roster the hole seems to be in the defence. Joni Pitkaien and Sami Salo are consistent D men but they are nowhere near the level of the Lidstroms, Niedermayers and Gonchars who will dominate the blueline through the tournament. If Timonen who plays important minutes with the Philadelphia Flyers steps up and does what he does with the Flyers and lead their D core. Allow the forwards do their thing and let whoever plays in net make routine saves, Finland has a good chance at making it far into the tournament.

Belarus: Andrei Kostistyn (if able to play)
The Belarusians will have very limited opportunities to get shots on let, and put the puck in the net. For this reason, they need to have opportunist offence, and Anrei Kostistyn is the one most capable of doing just that. He hasn't played a lot this season having been out since New Years Eve with a knee injury. He has scored 12goals in 40 games. Reports say he may be able to play but it is still 50/50. If he is unable to, it is up to his younger brother and fellow Canadien, Sergei Kostistyn. He will do just what I explained Andrei will have to do, in order for Belarus to perform.

Slovakia: Zdeno Chara
The Slovaks have a pretty strong back end but are lacking the depth up front to place in a tournament like this. Zdeno Chara is I feel the best player on the team. That is saying a lot, because the roster does consist of Marian Gaborik and Marian Hossa. The hulking Chara will lead this team to success playing every big minute. He will lead the team, and the players despite mostly being veterans, will feed off of him. A Norris Trophy demands respect.

Germany: Marco Strum
I had to think about this one. Strum, Christian Erhroff, or I thought perhaps Hamburg Freezers John Tripp. Erhoff has had a more than solid season with the Canucks and has had international experience. I had the privilege to see Tripp play a couple times live, when the World Championships were held here last May. At 6'2 he is big, but seems even bigger than that height. He has never put up big numbers but will make an impact for Germany. I ultimately decided to pick Boston Bruins Marco Strum because of his speed and is probably the most offensively gifted player on the team. The main reason I chose him was because of his international experience. He has represented his country since 1995. In the 2006 Winter Games he was to be the captain but was hurt just before the Games and had to pull out. He is the player that will bring the calmness into the room, and do what he has to do out on the ice.

Here are 4 of the 12 teams competing in the tournament. I will have the next 8 teams up in the next couple of days. Being the clever person I am, Canada will posted last. I'm watching the men's moguls, hoping to see Canada win a gold! It's sure looking good as of right now!

February 14th, 2010

Such a great sporting day, oh and it is Valentines day; Happy Valentines day! I decided to watch the Olympics last night so I didn't see anything. I started watching the woman's game vs. Slovakia but quickly changed it. I see no joy or point in watching a game where it is 7-0 in the 1st period. If it was men's then I would have probably stayed tuned but I don't know too much about the ladies playing for us so I had even less interest in it. I sure hope to see them do well, and take home gold. If they make it there I know I'll defiantly watch the entire game, haha.

February 12th:
Philadelphia over Montreal 3-2
PK Subban made his NHL debut! I've always loved to watch him in the World Juniors, a solid defencemen and just flat out entertaining. I don't think I'll ever forget when he became angry at an official after a whistle and jumped in the air slamming his hand on top of the net. Probably not a great description, but some people might be able to figure out what I'm talking about. Anyways, he played strong, picking up an assist and had 18 minutes of ice time. Dominic Moore also made his Habs debut and scored a goal in the 3rd to make the game 3-2. It wasn't enough, as the rest of the period went scoreless and the Flyers took the win.

New York Rangers over Pittsburgh 3-2
Sidney Crosby seemed to do all he could do. He scored both of the Pens goals; his first 6:32 into the first frame and his last in the 3rd on the PP. The new blue shirt, Olli Jokinen scored the OT winner, but don't worry it doesn't make him any less overrated.

New Jersey over Nashville 5-2
The goaltender who I am sure will be "starter" for Team Canada picked up the win, his 34th of the season. Travis Zajac started off the scoring but Cal O'Reilly potted a late one in the 1st. The two teams traded goals in the 2nd, but then the Devils owned the 3rd, scoring 3 goals. Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 32nd and soon after New Jersey's other big gun, Zach Parise had his 27th. Kovy and Zajac had the assists on that goal. Another Olympian Jamie Langenbrunner finished off the scoring with his 15th, with less than a minute left and an empty net.

St. Louis over Toronto 4-0
C'mon JS! You shoulda stood on your head, or fought your idiot teammate Colton Orr. He seems to have to big of an ego, and lets hop into reality and admit that he isn't all that great. Always my thought on the guy. That is why I am a little sad that Cam Janssen had to loose both fights, but at least Orr was chucked by the end of the game. The Leafs allowed 2 short-handed goals which in my humble opinon is pretty embarrassing. Chris Mason picked up the win for the Blues making 30 saves for the shutout.

Vancouver over Columbus 4-2
Atlanta over Minnesota 3-2
Colorado over Phoenix 2-1

Last night's games:
Philadelphia over Montreal 6-2
It seems like Jaroslav Halak didn't play to well, allowing 4 goals on 17 shots, forcing coach Jacques Martin to pull him in favor of Carey Price. Danny Briere scored a hat trick, scoring a goal in each period. Jeff Carter scored the game winner 3 quaters of the way through the 1st. Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez were the goal scorers for Montreal. Michael Leighton picks up yet another win.

Detroit over Ottawa 4-1
The Red Wings just simply outplayed Ottawa. They had 40 shots on net, compared to the 30 the Sens were able to produce. Matt Cullen was unable to help out any on the score sheet offense wise, but showed up on in because of a tripping penalty called on him in the first. I am unsure of who he played with but by looking at ice time, my guess would be with Chris Kelly and Ryan Shannon. I say replace Winchester with Shannon! The Wings had 4 different goal scorers, Kirk Maltby with his 4th, Pavel Datsyuk with his 17th, Newfie Dan Clearly with his 13th and lastly, Johan Frazen with his 3rd. The lone goal scorer for the Ottawa Senetors was Peter Regin. Assists went to Alexi Kovalev and Filip Kuba.

New York Islanders over Tampa Bay 5-4
Buffalo over San Jose 3-1
Carolina over New Jersey 5-2
Boston over Flordia 3-2
St. Louis over Washington 4-3
Dallas over Phoenix 3-0
Chicago over Atlanta 5-4
Calgary over Anaheim 3-1
Los Angeles over Colorado 3-0

The great American race is on, and of course the Olympics! A solid day to lazy around and do a considerable amount of channel flicking. Hope everyone enjoyed the opening cermony. It was incrediable to see the Georgia team walk in and see their reaction and also the spectators. The true Olympic spirit. I love it.

February 12th, 2010

Unbelievable, words cannot explain the tragedy that took place as Nodar Kumaritashvili died while testing out the track in Whistler. I do not know the sport well enough to say much, but I am human and know that whenever someone dies so unexpected and so young, it is unable to comprehend. Rest in peace Mr. Kumaritashvili.

It's hard to follow up or really care about anything else after hearing news like this. I stated earlier that Ryan Getzlaf was a go for the Olympics, but I may have spoken too soon. It seems like he will, but it is still up in the air. Canada's GM, Steve Yzerman has been paying close attention to the situation, and the Anaheim Ducks have left the decision to Getzlaf. On a good note, Getzlaf skated in a full practice today. USA defencemen Jack Johnson flew himself in to Vancouver to take part in the opening ceremony. I wonder who else within the NHL will be there? I sure as heck would want to be if I was chosen to represent my country.

Ottawa over Washington 6-5
Hello Capitals defence? Goalies ya there? Oh hey Ovechkin, hi Semin. Have you seen any of your D teammates? Yeah, neither have I. I've been lucky enough to see the top team in the NHL their past 2 games. Both games showed the depth and beauty of the forwards, but have seemed to lack in the defence category. Surprisingly they held the Senetors to only 28 shots, only 4 more than their totals. Alexander Semin scored a hat trick, scoring his first 2 goals in a blink of an eye. It was 3-2 and then boom! Semin potted 2 goals within a minute. Alexi Kovalev scored the game winner at the 7:36 mark in the 3rd.

Boston over Tampa Bay over 5-4
The Bruins came out with a mighty effort in the first, scoring 4 goals to Tamapa's 0. Both teams played a fairly even 2nd, the Lightning coming out with the 2-1 win. With the score 5-2 coming into the 3rd, Tampa Bay attempted to make a comeback but was just a goal short. Former Hab Michael Ryder scored an unreal goal, thanks to his linemates. Tuuka Rask gets the win.

Carolina over Buffalo 4-3
With this loss, and the Senators win, the Buffalo Sabres fell from 1st to 2nd in the Northeast division. Derek Roy opened the score just 2 minutes from the puck drop. Jochen Hecht scored his 13th of the season giving Buffalo a 2-0 lead. Before the end of the 1st though, Carolina was able to tie it up. They then exchanged goals putting it into overtime. There, Sergei Samsonov scored with a wrist shot, an assist going to the 6'3 Brandon Sutter.

Vancouver over Flordia 3-0
San Jose over Detroit 3-2
Dallas over Calgary 3-1
Edmonton over Los Angeles 3-2

The trade freeze came into effect a couple hours ago. Matt Cullen who I feel is a fantastic pickup for any team went to the Ottawa Sentetors. First though, I'll break down the Kari Lethonen trade to Dallas.

To Dallas: Kari Lethonen
To Atlanta: Ivan Vishnevskiy and a 4th Rounder in 2010
No one has even disputed the potential Lethonen's potential and for that his stock has been kept up. Vishnevskiy is a sold D-man and is pretty consistent. As much as it is hard to hear, this is a trade that will need time to show who got the upper hand. And it's all up to Lethonen, if he stays healthy and plays like he can, then Dallas has but if not, obviously Atlanta does.

To Minnesota: Cam Barker
To Chicago: Kim Johnsson, Nick Leddy
I feel like the Blackhawks are the winners here. Kim Johnsson is a great defenceman and they needed to move a young defender, and Cam Barker was the one guy I felt they could move without hurting to much. It would have been a fantastic pickup if they were able to pick up a forward prospect, but Nick Leddy will be able to crack an NHL lineup in a couple of years.

To Ottawa: Matt Cullen
To Carolina: Alexandre Picard, 2nd Round Pick
I love Matt Cullen as a player. He is full of heart and hustle, and has talent to go along with this. I hope to see him on a line with Jesse Winchester, they seem like a great pair, as they have similar styles of play. Brian Lee is down in the minors and will be ready for a full time job very, very soon. They needed to move a defenceman. Because of this I see Ottawa picking up Cullen for a 2 Rounder. I'd much rather have Matt Cullen over Dominic Moore...

So, under and hour to opening cermonies! Hope everyone is able to see them, as it is truly a once in a lifetime thing. I'm thinking about having another post tonight, but we'll see what happens.

February 11th, 2010

Ryan Getzlaf is a go for the Olympics, and so in Slovak superstar Marian Gaborik. For a bit there were doubts that this would be the case, but hey, s'all good. I guess it's not quite time for us to start thinking about the Games, I wish though. There are still NHL games going on, that we must remember! So onwards sir champion! That should be read in voice that you hear in those super awesome medieval movies... okay I'll stop now...

Tuesday's games:
Ottawa over Calgary 3-2
I caught 2/3rds of this game, in the early going I though Calgary was playing excellent. The line with Hagman, Stajan and Iginla were being heroes. Everything with the trio was seeming to clicked. I quite enjoyed it. They had the 2 goals for their team, all 3 players getting involved; Hagman scoring the first of the game, and Stajan getting the 3rd. Alexi Kovalev scored in between those goals at 17:10 of the first frame. It took weird, weird bounces and was a goal you could only shake your head at. Jesse Winchester tried to get a little rough and as that went on, Jamal Mayers and Chris Neil fought, interesting and it was a little uncalled for. Jarkko Ruutu scored to tie it up midway through the 2nd and near the late stages of also the 2nd, Jason Spezza scored the game winner, assists going to Jonathan Cheechoo who was all over the net the entire game, but just couldn't seem to score.

Boston over Buffalo 3-2
Daniel Paille who was a great pickup for Boston score early on, setting a tone. He then went on to score another a couple minutes later, giving the Bruin's a quick 2-0 lead. Buffalo came back in the 2nd scoring 2 of their own. No goal scoring took place in the third, and the 5 minutes of 4 on 4 in overtime. What would have made theis story complete was a shootout winner by no other then Daniel Paille. Too bad that didn't happen. However, Deavid Krejci did giving Boston the 2 points.

New York Islanders or Nashville 4-3
Carolina over Flordia 4-1
Tamapa Bay over Vancouver 3-1
St. Louis over Detroit 4-3
Chicago over Dallas 4-3

Last nights:
Montreal over Washington 6-5
Rats!! Why didn't I stay up and finish watching this game?! Darn sleepiness, you dropped the ball on this one. This game was certainly entertaining to watch, the parts I saw. It was strange to say the least. Washington who is one of the best teams in the NHL just couldn't handle the heart and hustle that Montreal showed. Caps fans might be angry over the goal they disallowed where Ovie cranked Hal "Pylon" Gill, but I feel like the officials made the right call. Not only did Ovechkin make Gill crash into Carey Price, but Gill never had a full handle of the puck in the first place. I was also glad from what I saw, Carey Price play solid in net.

Philadelphia over New Jersey 3-2
Maybe they're gonna have to keep Michael Leighton, he's been playing great for the Flyers. Travis Zajac continues his impressive season scoring his 18th of the campaign. Simon Gagne scored the OT winner.

Nashville over New York Rangers 2-1
Columbus over San Jose 3-0
Pittsburgh over New York Islanders 3-1
Phoenix over Minnesota 3-2
Colorado over Atlanta 4-3
Anaheim over Edmonton 3-2

A simple trade took place too, Florida Panther Dominic Moore to the Montreal Canadiens for 2nd Round Draft pick in 2011. I like Moore as a player but don't seem him fitting all that great. There are enough young eager players in and just enough solid players within the depth chart to make this trade a little unnecessary. I do hope to see him play well though. This trade still needs to be confirmed by the NHL.

Anyways, the Sens are playing the Caps and as of right now it's 2-1. Will have more updates tommorow I imagine, the opening ceremonys are tommorow too!

February 9th, 2010 (2)

The announcement of Bob Gainey of the Montreal Canadiens was the big buzz off the ice since the last post. He will remain with the team and close friend and assistent of Mr. Gainey, Pierre Gauthier will take the position on. I liked what Bob had to say about his decision about stepping down, how he was not ready to commit long term doing a job where he has to do just that. Whether this is true or not, it's a nice statement. I never minded Gainey as a GM. It was heart breaking to see Saku Koivu leave and I think he should have thought more about keeping Francois Boullion. But he did pick up the likes of Mike Camalleri and Brian Gionta, and picked up Josh Gorges via trade. He knew that he picked up 3 small forwards through free agency but the speed of these players are a sight to see. Montreal could have done without the signing of Scott Gomez and perhaps picked up a player with a little more size, but who knows what was possible. Gainey's record with the historic Habs was pretty impressive 241-176-46-7. Plus the Hab's are fine as of now, being 6th place in the East.

A trade took place that isn't really worth mentioning. Carolina traded Niklas Wallin and a 5th rounder to San Jose for a 2nd round draft pick. It seems like a fair trade under the circumstances but is certainly not earth shattering.

A couple big injuries also have happened. Canadian Ryan Getzlaf has gone down and is has an unknown status as the Olympics creep closer. 2 important and newly acquired Habs are out till March. Beniot Pouliout who has shined since coming from Minnesota has an upper-body injury and defenceman Marc-Andre Bergeron has been diagnosed with a left knee injury. Marian Gaborik who is often hurt, was cut in practice but appears to be fine. A sigh can be released from Ranger and Slovak fans. Not much can be really said about injuries, other then it really sucks for GM's, I imagine Stevie Y is sweating just a little bit right now.

February 9th, 2010

The good ol' days. How did hockey lovers, just like ourselves listen to hockey on the radio?! I did it last night coming home from an away game and I must say, it was flippin' difficult. What I thought was just a simple scrum turned out to be a fight. Maybe it was just me to wound up from our game, we won 5-0 with 9 players and I had my first hat-trick in many, many years. Still, I can't imagine having to listen to your favorite team over the radio. Oh how I love the days of HD, flat screen TV's. Mad respect to all the hockey followers that loved the game just as much as us, without the technology we have today.

San Jose over Toronto 3-2
This is the game I half attempted to listen too. It was 2-2 going into the first and Kessel seems to have found a 2nd part to a scoring streak. Tyler Bozak seems to be fitting in although I still feel that Matt Stajan was too big of a loss. JS Giguere finally let in a goal as a Maple Leaf, now giving him a GAA with them at around an awful 1.00. Ryane Clowe scored the game winner at 7:39 of the 3rd. Russian Olympian Evgeni Nabokov played a great game picking up 32 saves. Francois Beauchemin played the most out of everyone, with 22:42 minutes of ice time. In that time he went -1 and picked up a tripping and also interference penalty.

Philadelphia over New Jersey 3-2
3 straight goals gave Philly the regulation win. Zach Parise scored his 26th goal in the 1st period which was followed by a short-handed goal in the 2nd put in by Anssi Salmela. He left the game on a stretcher later on in the game, after being knocked out by a shot that struck him in the face. He was later seen sporting many stitches and half a tooth missing. He says he has a headache but otherwise okay. The Flyers scored 2 late goals in the 2nd and Mike Richards scored the 3rd halfway through that last period. Michael Leighton played in net for the Flyers. I imagine they are going to give him some time to play before the deadline. He'll be decent trade bait as he has potential, but has had to put it on hold due to limited playing time.

Phoenix over Edmonton 6-1
Pat Quinn has to be sounding like a mother after finding her daughter drunk for the first time. I must say, I've never had the pleasure to see that but I imagine the mom would be disappointed, slightly angry and confused on what to do. He has such a talented group on paper that just is unable to win games. Matthew Lombardi had 5 points in the game, which is always huge for your team. Despite the lopsided loss, Edmonton out shot the 'Yotes by 1, 34 to 33. Ethan Moreau was a nasty -4 with only 14:59 minutes of ice time. Ouch.

Colorado over St. Louis 5-2
Anaheim over Los Angeles 4-2

February 8th, 2010

Disappointingly, I was unable to find the time to sit down and blog about the games on Saturday. The Tournament of Hearts was on and I'm super sad PEI was unable to defeat Canada. Erin Carmody's looks alone should given them the win. Also, the Super Bowl was on. I never really cared to watch football; too many stops. I was hoping for the Saints to win just because they were the underdog and it makes for a beautiful story. It was a good game, the onside kick was crazy and the interception was just pretty. I couldn't help though to think throughout the game how lucky Mike Fisher is.

So onto the games... (Saturday, Feb. 6th)

Montreal over Pittsburgh 5-3
The Bulldogs did excellent. As I mentioned earlier Brock Trotter was called up and it was much deserved. He certainly proved that during the game. Him along with Ryan White and David Desharnais were full of energy. Brian Gionta also played a fantastic game, showing his speed on his first goal and natural talent on his 2nd. Both were a sight to see. I'm sure every Habs fan had their breath held when Andrei Markov went down and appeared to be in a lot of pain. Thankfully he seemed fine, and finished the game. Sidney Crosby finished the game with an assist and Fleury was pulled, plowing over a stool on route to the dressing room.

Vancouver over Boston 3-2
The Canucks who are on the beginning of an insane road trip due to the Olympics being in their home were able to pull off the shootout win. Despite being down 2 after a period the strong play of Pavol Demitra allowed to drive away with the 2 points. Demitra (classic... NICE TO MEET YA) scored the 'Nucks tying goal with 5 minutes left. He then went to put in the winning shootout tally. Giant Zdeno played over half the game and Bruin's Johnny Boychuk left when a high slap shot domed his in the face. A nasty injury to say the least. Olympic bound Luongo picked up the win while Tuuka Rask was credited with the 1 point loss.

Toronto over Ottawa 5-0
Toronto played inspired, I'm sure the loss of Brendan Burke never left their thoughts. After a convincing win then a convincing loss, I figured the Leafs were just on the same road after the trades. With this game they showed that they might not give the Bruins a pick close to #1. Giguere has yet to let in a goal since being traded which is impressive to think, but ever more so when he's in a Toronto uniform. Let's not lie though, Ottawa played pretty bad, helping out Toronto's case.

Colorado over Edmonton 3-0
Craig Anderson, enough said. He made all 20 saves giving him his 28th win of the year. Brandon Yip (I so wish I had that last name) scored to make the game unreachable in the last minute of the game. The Oilers continue to quite frankly, actually I'll be nice, slide.

Los Angeles over Detroit 4-3
It's always rewarding to comeback from a 3 goal deficit and that is just what the young Kings pulled off. They went into the room down 3 after 20 minutes but came back to score 3 of there own in the 2nd, holding the Wings to nothing for the next 2 periods. Ryan Smyth scored to tie the game up and Handzus scored with 2 and a half minutes left in the 3rd to win.

New York Rangers over New Jersey 3-1.
Sweden (Lundqvist) won over Canada (Brodeur) in this one.

Dallas over Phoenix 4-0.
Carolina over New York Islanders 3-1.
Atlanta over Flordia 4-2
Tampa Bay over Calgary 2-1.
Columbus over Buffalo 4-0.
Chicago over St. Louis 2-1.
San Jose over Nashville 4-3.
Minnesota over Philadelphia 2-1.

Thankfully only 2 games on Sunday. Didn't catch as much as I would have liked of the Montreal game because of a Super Bowl party and only saw the last bit of the Washington/Pittsburgh game.

Boston over Montreal 3-0
PEI'er Adam McQuaid scored his first career goal. Marc Savard reacted a little to much but I do suppose they need some excitment with the slump they were going though. Montreal didn't play with the bounce they had on Saturday and that resulted in the score. Rask played very solid saving 36 shots out of 36 at him. Strum was the only other score in the game, picking up his 17th and 18th goal of the season. I enjoyed how both teams started the game with a nice little scrum in the middle of play.

Washington over Pittsburgh 5-4
Ovechkin, Crosby, and no not Malkin but Staal dominate the scoresheet in this one. Both Sidney and Jordan had 2 while Alex the Great had a hat-trick. Mike Knuble scored the OT winner 2:49 into it, assists from Ovechkin and Mike Green.

Other news has happened throughout the hockey world but as of right now I don't have the time. Hopefully I'll soon get up my thoughts up.
